Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that is typically know as a ‘nose job’. The fundamental part of rhinoplasty deals with the reshaping of the nose, although, people undertake this operation for several different reasons. These include reshaping the bridge, tip, septum, nostrils, and overall profile of the nose to enhance the appearance and create a smaller more proportionate nose.

Is getting a rhinoplasty worth it?

Generally, people opt for rhinoplasty treatment to improve their confidence and self-esteem. Therefore, if you are changing the shape of your nose purely for appearance reasons, it is important that you can explain to your surgeon, exactly what it is that you dislike about your nose.

Of course, there are limitations to the extent of how much a nose can be altered. In each case, people will be advised on the specific changes to help manage their expectations of the operation.

What is the best rhinoplasty technique?

When looking into rhinoplasty, you will find that there are several techniques. The two main ones are open and closed rhinoplasty.

Closed rhinoplasty is the popular technique as the incisions occur on the inside of the nose. This means that there is no noticeable scarring, leading to less recovery time after the operation. Open rhinoplasty is when a small incision is made either side of the nostrils to elevate the skin, with the intention of gaining access to the inside of the nose.

Although the incision is made on the outside of the nose, the scar is difficult to see once healed. With this technique recovery time takes a while longer, but it allows for more major changes.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

Every rhinoplasty operation will be performed slightly differently, as each patient’s personal situation is considered. The basis of the operation will depend on the patient’s facial features, the size of their nose, their skin quality, their age, their past medical history, and their desired outcome.

After an in-depth assessment, the surgeon will recommend them a personal treatment plan. The exact nature of the rhinoplasty operation will also depend on the area of the nose that is being performed on.

Although, the requirements of each patient are different, rhinoplasty operations tend to last between one to two hours. Patients can be in and out of the surgery within a day, however there is sometimes the need for them to stay at the hospital overnight to recover.

It is recommended that patients take up to ten days off, following the operation. At this point it is likely the nose casting will be removed. Bruising and swelling may impact the whole face, although this will subside after a couple of weeks. The result of the rhinoplasty will become gradually clearer over the following months, as the healing continues.
